20 Tips

As you know, I have a particular interest in matters regarding children with special needs, as a result of my own parenting experience. I don't share personal details for various reasons, but when I can try to use my experience and knowledge to help other parents (I serve on the board of YAI/NYL, the Early Intervention branch of a New York-based non-profit organization which helps children with developmental disabilities).

So I was really honored when I was approached by New York Family magazine to write something for their November issue (the one shown here, with Julianne Moore on the cover), which has a "spotlight on special needs." Check out my article, called 20 Things To Know If Your Child Has Special Needs, which gives advice on everything from how to handle unsolicited advice, to how to meet other parents raising children with developmental challenges. Some of the tips are New York City-specific, but the majority apply to any parent in this situation. I hope that some of you will find it helpful.

Please also take a moment to read another article in this issue- "My Incredible Ordinary Life". It is a personal essay written by one of most inspiring NYC "mom" friends, Sandy Krulwich. Sandy and her husband both have cerebral palsy; their six-year-old daughter does not. Besides being an amazing mom, Sandy is a warm, humble, and funny person (and has been a very supportive friend to me and my kids). I encourage you to read her story too.

Thank you so much to New York Family for its continued attention to special needs families here in the city, and also to Eric Messinger for his very kind mention in the issue's Editor's Notes .
