It's preschool admissions season in New York City (I know, I know...it's crazy) and, for those of you who have little ones, I have a school to recommend. Full disclosure: the founder/director Nyla Kamlet L.C.S.W--who is a child therapist and parenting consultant for CBS news--is also a friend of mine. But I would heartily endorse her school yway. It's called PlayTogether and it is a small, intimate Upper West Side preschool for children ages 2 to 4. It uses a play-based curriculum designed to encourage development and emotional growth in six areas: creative play, socialization, language skills, visual and sensory skills (art), rhythm or rhyming music skills, and small group learning. Here's what's great about PlayTogether compared to other NYC preschools. Enrollment is flexible (which is unusual in Manhattan), meaning that parents can sign up for as many days as they want (anywhere from 2 to 5 days a week). It is also a nurturing, "inclusion"-model school which can accommodate, for example, children with speech or language delays, or children who are very shy. Read this article to see how Play Together's play-based curriculum works so well.
PlayTogether will be holding an open house at is facility (270 West 84th Street) on Sunday, March 4th at 6:30pm (RSVP appreciated). Email the director for more information.
