Two years ago, our apartment was overrun by Zhu Zhu pets. Then, last summer, it was Hexbugs and Sillly Bandz. And now, for the Summer of 2011, my almost-8-year-old's daughter's obsession is Squinkies, these little soft, rubbery figures that are taking toy stores by storm. Ever since I brought a sample home from a summer toy preview this past Spring, she has been busy opening & closing their little "surprise" bubble homes (I am not sure how much of a surprise they are since the bubbles are often transparent) and then playing with the little critters inside. There are cleverly marketed sets for girls and boys, natch (i.e. a Disney Princess set, a Marvel heroes set, etc.) plus all sorts of accessories like playsets, carrying cases, and even apparel for Squinkies' owners. While they're not outrageously expensive (the Bubble Pack series pictured here costs $11.99), you will quickly be spending more and more as your child wants the inevitable add-ons. Trust me.
