Strong, Silent Type

Lots of you have been kind enough to ask how S. is doing with his therapies, so I thought I'd write an update.

I wish I had a dime for every well-meaning person who has said, "My friend's/cousin's/hairdresser's son didn't say a word until he was 3, and then one day he just started speaking in full sentences! So will your son!" While I hoped that S., too, was just a "late talker", he was recently diagnosed with a speech disorder called apraxia. It is a neurological disorder in which the brain does not send the proper signals a child needs to produce articulate speech. He will be 2 1/2 next week and his speech is at the level of a young 1-year-old. He has just a small handful of words, and he is often unintelligible. He can not produce certain sounds or letters at all (yet). He receives speech therapy 5 times per week, and every day at home I am reinforcing the techniques the therapists have taught me.

Since my older child had some developmental delays, having a child who is not "typically developing" is nothing new to me. The lows can be very low, but the highs are amazing beyond compare (I've posted about that before). On the tough days, it can be very sad, stressful, and isolating. It has been all the more so for me for reasons I can not elaborate here. I am very lucky that my parents, sister, and friends are an amazing source of support. And, there is a certain black humor that exists among parents of special needs kids. My friend J. (also the mother of a special-needs son) and I speak on the phone weekly about our kids' latest progress (or lack thereof). Sometimes we start out crying, but by the end of our call we are laughing hysterically.

Anyway, while there is no way to predict what will happen when with S's speech, there have been some good signs recently. He has had more "pop-outs", which is a term for these spooky moments when he suddenly blurts out a word perfectly, as if he were 10 years old. This is a common symptom of apraxic children. Then, just as suddenly, the word disappears for weeks or months. In the last few weeks, S. has suddenly blurted out "together," "that way," and "Dora," each one time. He hasn't said them since.

I grab those moments fiercely, and grab my son and give him a great big hug. He laughs and hugs back and says, "ayyyyyyye," which I am going to translate as, "Wasn't that cool?" It sure is.

Sweet Dreams

I always have luck (and save money) with sleepwear for my kids from The Children's Place. These days R. is enjoying her new Valentine's PJ Set (on sale for $12.37) and plush slippers (on sale for $6.47). These make great Valentine's Day treats for your kids that don't break the bank. Visit the newly-redesigned website of Children's Place for more ideas.

Did Someone Say Delivery?

Contrary to what my profile indicates, I do in fact cook sometimes. Nothing fancy and five-star, though, just some basic pasta and chicken dishes, and a mean grilled cheese. Nonetheless, I was intrigued by the chance to sample Susie's Supper Club, a delicious homemade food delivery service for kids (and their grown-ups) here in NYC. Chef Susie Cover spent four years as a private chef in New York and she specializes in disguising (I mean, customizing) adults' meals for kids. These are dishes that you will WANT to share with your kids. I got to sample lots of goodies from their menu including Chicken Milanese, Spinach Square, and Mini Pumpkin Cupcakes (my favorites) and Turkey Meatballs, Polenta Fries, and SSC Brownies (my kids' picks). Prices are reasonable- an adult-sized entree you can easily share with your kiddos costs about $10. Ordering on the website is easy, and the photos of the food, by the way, are lovely! Susie's Supper Club currently delivers in Manhattan and plans to expand to Brooklyn soon. Spice mealtime up a bit at Susie's Supper Club.

Falling Dominos

My sister passed along this breaking news to me, which really bums me out...Domino magazine is ceasing publication soon. It was one of my favorite magazines. Ever. And it was an affordable gift that I loved to give. This darn economy.

One Kid Outerwear On Sale

My gigantic son turns 2 1/2 next week and already weighs 37 pounds and is over 38 inches tall. No surprise he has already outgrown this winter's reversible light blue and navy winter coat by One Kid which I purchased last Fall. With temps not warming up anytime soon, I took advantage of this week's winter clearance sale (up to 75% off!) at NYC shop Estella and snagged the same coat in a bigger size for just $64.99 (plus free shipping automatically applied to orders over $50). Estella has lots more One Kid outerwear on sale right now. I LOVE One Kid and swear by it for my kids' durable, stylish, reasonably-priced winter outerwear (R. has the brown/pink reversible coat also on sale). Stock up for next winter!

p.s. The coat arrived sooo fast...maybe a day or two after I placed the order. Great sale and great shop!

MyMomShops Giveaway: Dolly & Dimples Tea Party Collection Socks

Last week I posted about how to copy the look of Tori Spelling's daughter's nursery for less (and how to get the same look as the famous mom & newborn daughter, too). The gift set arrives with four pairs (two pink, two black) in a beautifully decorated gift box. William Eggleston: Los Alamos

I grabbed half an hour the other day to hop over to the Whitney Museum of American Art, where I worked for two years right after college. I saw the exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera: Photographs and Video 1961-2008 (sorry, New Yorkers, it has just closed). This was the first U.S. retrospective for Eggleston, a major American 20th century photographer (and one of my favorites) who is best known for his emotive, color-saturated works. My favorite segment of the show was these photographs from his Los Alamos series, taken between 1965 and 1974 (not necessarily in the Los Alamos by the way; the artist visited that town at some point during those years, but it is possible many of the photos were taken elsewhere). Regardless, aren't these wonderful images? If you want to see more, check out Eggleston's book of Los Alamos images, available for $70 at Photo Eye.

CPSIA Alert

Many thanks to our affiliate Craftsbury Kids for passing along this text provided by some marvelous Etsy sellers.

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.
Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html

And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law

Mom's A Winner

I've seen this crimson long-sleeve "My Mom Rocks" tee by Wes & Willy (a manufacturer of high-quality boys' playclothes) in several catalogs, but never for a price this low. It is available at a site called My Little Pockets for just $12 (reduced from $21) in toddler sizes through size 7. My Little Pockets also has a flat shipping fee of $4.99, so while you're there, check out other bargains by designers including Baby Nay, Deux par Deux, and Le Top.

Go Ask Alice

I stopped by the New York International Gift Fair at the Javits Center this past Sunday and saw lots of clever new products in housewares, stationery, toys & more. I'm still sorting through all my notes and photos, but first I wanted to show you this eye-catching debut booth by Alice Supply Co. If you thought dustpans and toilet plungers always had to be ugly, Alice Supply Co. makes you think again. I love their promo materials which read, "We believe that the humble dustpan's days of being shoved away in the closet will son be over; that a toolbox has feelings too, and that not all scrub brushes are created equal."

How fun are these??

Check back soon for more new products from the Gift Fair!

Stella!

I had so much fun writing a post several months ago about how to copy the looks of Tori Spelling's new master bedroom and son's bedroom (my post even got picked up by uber-blog Celebrity Babies!) that I decided to tackle the same for her new daughter Stella's nursery.

Here's Stella's girly room (photo courtesy of Celebrity Babies):

Here's how you copy this look:

First, the bright pink crib bedding. Tori chose this Harper Three Piece Crib Set ($559) by Serena & Lily, and based the rest of the nursery on its color scheme:

I love the little decorative mirror on Stella's nightstand. This Roses and Bow Accent Wall Mirror by Lamps Plus is a good deal at $99.99:

Likewise, you imitate the look of baby Stella's custom-made draperies with this Classic Home Princeton Window Set at Target ($19.99):

No doubt the posh glider chair was custom-upholstered, too, but this Lullaby Rocker by Pottery Barn Kids ($1199) does the trick as well:

This sweet White Wood Table Nightstand with 2 Drawers at Three Cats Home Decor costs just $46.60.

Like how Tori defines post-partum chic? She's wearing one of the super stylish maxi dresses popularized by Angelina Jolie; try out this Gypsy 05 Tie Dye Maxi Dress at The Trend Boutique ($132). Also, use code "MomShops15" for 15% off plus free shipping at The Trend Boutique!

And little Stella's toes are decked out in booties like these Tea Party Collection socks at Baby Bunne ($26)

What do you think of Stella's nursery and Tori's taste?

Chasing Fireflies is a catalog with some of the most beautiful dresses for girls that I've ever seen. Right now I'm admiring this perfect-for-Valentine's Day Raspberry Hearts Dress. Love the bell sleeves and the gathered elastic waist. It's made of machine washable cotton/lycra, and costs $78 (sizes 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4) at Chasing Fireflies.

Political Party(time)

The energetic, multi-talented Isabel Kallman (founder of AlphaMom) has a great post up about her inauguration viewing party, which I was honored to attend on Tuesday. The history day was even more meaningful for Isabel personally because she completed, signed, and sent in her US Naturalization application. Read about the party (and see more photos from the event- yours truly is in one of them) here. I was sent home with cupcakes (see above) which were convenient for my own mini-party with R. and S. later (R: "How come I wasn't invited to an Inaugural Ball?") Four days later, we are coming off of our sugar high, but are still on cloud 9 about our new President Obama.

Darling Dishes

Here is another one of my favorite recent finds from Etsy. Mud Hutt Studio is a shop in Georgia that makes beautiful little ceramic keepsake dishes. These would be sweet baby shower gifts, Valentine's Day gifts, or Mother's Day gifts. You could put them just about anywhere in your home- as trinkets on display, or even as a little place to keep your rings. The two dishes shown above are my favorites- Love Grows Here ($12) and Sweet Mommy Bird (which has already been sold but if you "convo"- that's Etsy speak for e-mail- the seller, she just may create another one for you). Visit Mud Hutt Studio.

Let Me Grab A Pen and Paper

You will flip for these Flip Notes Monograms Notepads that I just discovered at Bright and Bold. Each one is a slim, metal case (measuring just 4.5" x 2.75") with a handy white notepad and retractable pen inside. You can easily toss it into your purse or briefcase, and you'll never be fumbling for a pen and paper. Refill paper pads and pens are available, too. At this price (1 for $11.95, or 3 for $32.95) this is a great item to stock-up on whether you need holiday gifts, Mother's Day gifts, or even bridesmaid gifts. Check them out at Bright and Bold (where shipping is free, with no minimum order!)

It's a Wunderbar Life

While searching online for Wonderboy clothing on sale (Wonderboy is one of my favorite clothing brands for little S.), I stumbled onto this "Wunderbar" long-sleeve tee at Small Concept. This tee has special significance for S. and me since my grandparents came to New York from Germany, and my grandmother's maiden name is S's middle name. And, of course, since he is so "wunderbar" (wonderful), himself. The shirt is 100% cotton and has cool contrast stitching and raw edges. It's on sale now for just $17.95 (reduced from $29.95, available in sizes 6-12mos, 12-18mos, or 2T) at Small Concept.

Birthday Cakes That Are a Piece of Cake

Wow, I love this new Happy Birthday Cake Mould (by the unfortunately-named shop Suck UK). Baking a birthday cake has never been easier with this 8.75 inch diameter food-safe silicon mould (you can heat it to 300 degrees in the oven, but you also can bake a cake in the microwave in just 6 minutes...a recipe is enclosed). A surefire crowd-pleaser. Buy it for $31.95 at Amazon.com.

Don't Miss This Flight

I just got an e-mail from Craftsbury Kids about their brand-new Limited Edition Obama Airforce One Collectible Toy Plane. Fly, don't walk, to snatch a few of these up! It is the ultimate kids' keepsake from the Inauguration. Featuring a silk-screened image of our 44th President, the airplane is made in Pennsylvania from eco-friendly domestic hardwoods, with non-toxic, lead-free paint and finish. At just $18, it's pretty much a guaranteed hit as a gift for any child, or even for a new baby in 2009. Order it for $18 (it may be worth much more someday!) at Craftsbury Kids.

OK, due to a very tight budget I buy verrrry few of the items I feature at this blog, but I just had to grab this one. Just ordered it for R. and S. Can't wait for it to arrive!

New York State of Mind

More news from New York today....I want to thank New York Family Magazine for its flattering review of MyMomShops in their widely-read newsletter last week (a super-useful newsletter for NYC parents, by the way; sign up for it at New York Family). New York Family is holding two events this weekend that are of interest to metro-area moms and dads. First up are Camp Fairs (featuring camps for preschoolers through 'tweens) on Sat. Jan. 24th from 12-3pm at St. Jean Baptiste High School (173 E. 75th St.) and Sun. Jan. 25th from 12-3pm at Congregation Rodeph Sholom (7 West 83rd St.) Then, stop by the New Parents Expo and Family Fun Day, on Sun. Jan. 25th from 12-3pm at Reebok Sports Club (160 Columbus Avenue between 67th and 68th Streets), featuring a huge range of goods and services, as well as face painters, magicians, clowns, and more (I've attended with my kids before and they loved it). And, it's all free! Visit New York Family.

Introducing Chase's Treasures

I am very proud of my friend Jess who has just launched an online boutique, Chase's Treasures, which sells beautiful gifts (often personalized) for babies and children. We happen to have similar tastes so you will spot a few items that I have featured at MyMomShops before, as well as the new ones pictured here [top to bottom: My Very Own Name Personalized Plate ($19.95), My Very Own Name Personalized Board Book with Plush Lamb ($29.95), and monogrammed burp cloths ($16 for a set of two)]. You really can't go wrong with any of the gifts Jess has selected, whether as a new baby gift or a birthday gift. Soon, Chase's Teasures will also have a unique a consignment section (Jess is an experienced registered trading assistant and is a expert at selling other people's goodies). Chase's Treasures has just launched but will be adding many more products, so keep checking back!

Oh Happy Day

Update: Wow, what a day! A million thanks to Isabel Kallman of Alpha Mom who invited me to her inauguration viewing party, where I met lovely and talented fellow bloggers from Design Mom, Cool Mom Picks, Looky Daddy, Mommy Poppins, and Mama Knows Breast. There was lively conversation, joyful tears, Obama cupcakes, and plenty of champagne. Doesn't get much better than that. Congratulations, America!

I won't be posting today...just soaking it all in. Enjoy the celebrations, everyone.

The Pre-Party

Yes, another political post today (and tomorrow, too...I'm in the zone now! Back to shopping on Wednesday). Did you catch the Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on TV yesterday? It was pretty amazing. It was also fun watching the Obama girls' reactions (how cute was 10-year-old Malia taking her own photos?). Here are some favorite images I found online (top three from Yahoo, bottom two from Gawker):

Hair Comes the Sun

I am cautiously optimistic that my five-year-old daughter may soon let me put a barrette in her hair (she has refused them for the past 2 years, but the other night I found her trying some on). She may wear one from Moo G Clips, a new shop founded by a Seattle mom who started making them for her infant daughter (who had just a little bit of thin hair). They really do stay put thanks to a no slip grip. There are already a ton of designs available including lots of patterns for bows, snaps and clips, and appliques (and custom orders are available, too). Best of all, they are both high quality and quite affordable; an appliqued barrette costs just $4. Check them out at Moo G Clips.

Moey Moves West

Attention NYC moms. If, like me, you are 1) looking for a drop-in class to keep your toddler from going stir crazy in this weather and 2) on a tight budget, then check out the "Moey's Music Party" classes with my pal Melissa Levis (aka Moey). Moey is a talented songwriter (and mom) whose lively, themed "music parties" have a small cult following with the under-5 set. Just like a real party, each class features songs, dancing bubbles, scarves, pompoms, and (S's favorite) free party favors. Moey already has classes on the East Side at Caffe Notte (85th/2nd), and now Moey's Music Party is headed west to Symphony Space (96th/Broadway). Classes are just $25 each for a 10-week series or $35 per drop in class. This is about 40% less than typical mommy and me music classes in NYC (shocking but true...for those of you who are reading this outside of NYC). Clever songs, bubbles, party favors, and a warm place to take your 2 year old when it is 10 degrees outside...that's music to my ears! Visit Moey's Music Party for more details.

Last Chance to Win 10 Big Giveaways!

Hurry! You've got 12 hours left (till midnight tonight, EST time) to enter any or all TEN giveaways from last week's Blogiversary Giveaway Week. Keep scrolling down to enter contests to win Plan Toys from Petit Baby, nursery decor from Skip Hop, and more! Check back tomorrow morning to see if you won (or sign up for our e-newsletter by e-mailing me with "newsletter" in the subject line). Good luck!

Two Years Ago!

In January 2007, thanks to a certain adorable but sleepless five-month-old (shown at left), I found myself online many of the wee hours, and I started this blog to share my shopping finds. My first post appeared on January 17th. The blog has since grown from about, oh, 3 visitors per day (my mom and 2 of her friends!) to a current daily average of 700 readers. One thing that has not changed, though...little S. still starts his day at 5am! Sleep deprivation aside, he and his big sister R. continue to be my joy and inspiration. I love writing this blog and I thank you all for making it one of your regular reads!

Fonts For You

Being something of a typography-phile (I am hoping to find time to watch this PBS documentary soon on my DVR), I really like this fabulous fonts gift set from Etsy seller Carolina Cottage. The set includes her best-selling wooden decoupaged tray (9 x 6 x 2 inches) with a four piece marble coaster set. All items are protected with 3 coats of varnish and backed with felt. This is a perfect gift for a teacher, writer, or designer. $32 at Carolina Cottage.

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

I hope you've had fun participating in this week's 2nd Blogiversary Giveaways. Remember, you can enter any or all of the contest before midnight (EST) this Sunday, January 18th. So keep scrolling down to see all of the contests from this past week, and good luck! (And if you want a reminder to check back here on Monday to see if you've won, e-mail me with "newsletter" in our subject line to join our e-mail list).

Our final giveaway this week is from Little Twig, a kids' bath-and-body site that offers refreshingly natural products ranging from bubble bath to diaper cream to shampoos to travel kits, all charmingly packaged. The stuff is designed for kids, but you may just want to borrow it yourself. Little Twig products contain no phthlates, and they also offer soy, wheat, nut, and fragrance-free options for those with particular allergies or extra sensitive skin. Even better, this lovely company doesn't just talk the talk, they walk the walk. They run their own recycling program (if you return your empty Little Twig containers, you get a hefty discount on your next order) and give a portion of their profits to the Every Child Foundation. What's not to like? Run the bath and have fun!

TWO winners will each receive generous gift sets from Little Twig, containing baby wash, bodymilk, bubble bath, a scrubbing bath mitt and washcloth. Each gift set is valued over $50!

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #9: R. Nichols

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Several years before I was a mom (heck, before anyone even shopped online), I became a big fan of R. Nichols stationery when I spotted it at Kate's Paperie here in NYC. "Nick", the talented artist and driving force behind R. Nichols, has become famous in the stationery world for his spare, stylish illustrations made from colored paper, a glue stick, and scissors. I love how he depicts "slice of life" moments for women, from hailing a cab to pushing a stroller.

Our 9th giveaway this week is a gift set from R. Nichols including all of the following items:

One R. Nichols tote ($24-$28, you choose the design you'd like). The shopper tote (made entirely from recycled materials, by the way) shown below is my favorite.

One copy of French Women for All Seasons 2009 Calendar ($14), illustrated by R. Nichols, and including "words of wisdom and recipes."

Three boxes of flat note cards ($20, you choose any of the designs available). Here are some ideas (top to bottom: baby boy, the ladies, and flower garden):

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #8: Peace Love Mom

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Our seventh giveaway of the week is from Peace Love Mom, a shop which was founded in 2005 by 3 moms. Peace Love Mom sells apparel (and now stationery, too) which celebrates the positive aspects of motherhood (no "Mama Needs Her Sleep" tees here...perhaps wearing one of the tees pictured here will pick up your mood instead!) Even Kate Gosselin (of Jon & Kate + 8 fame) has been photographed wearing their signature "Happy Mom" tee. If you're having a rough day, put on one of these tees and you may just start smiling, too! Here are some of my favorite tee designs from Peace Love Mom (all are available in sizes small through 2XL):

Happy Mom Cranberry Tee

Peace Love Mom Chocolate Tee

Lucky Mom Pink Soft Tee

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #7: Tyler & Tallulah

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

As I mentioned recently, I am slowly trying to "sneak in" some more designer threads (I am getting tired of Gymboree) into my daughter's wardrobe. The fabulous boutique site that is sponsoring this morning's giveaway- Tyler and Tallulah- is a perfect place to start if you are trying to do the same. Tyler and Tallulah carries some of the hottest European designers (like Catimini, IKKS, Kenzo, Jottum, and Floriane) at majorly discounted prices. In fact, almost all of their winter 2007/2008 items are currently 50% off!

Which is why you'll definitely want to enter today's giveaway for a $100 gift certificate to Tyler and Tallulah. With the discounted prices, you can get some unbelievable deals on clothing you might otherwise have to forego. I even discovered some new designers for myself (all of the ones below except Catimini). Here are some of my favorites (there are limited sizes left, but don't worry, there is plenty more to browse):

Catimini Spirit Denim Light Brown Cardigan (reduced to $40 from $80, sizes 6 and 7 available). Trendy, chunky swing style cardigan with fun, colorful buttons and stitching.

Mim-Pi Blue Polka Dot Blue and Black Dress Winte (reduced to $33.25 from $66.50, sizes 6/6x, 7/8, or 9/10 available). This one jumped out at me right away. Beautiful details like ric-rac pleating down the front.

Marese Girls Souvenirs Kilt Skirt & Krypton Top Set (reduced to $64 from $128, size 2T left). A unique, dressy set at a great price.

Verde & Mela striped layered blouse (reduced to $75 from $150, sizes 6 and 10 available). Love this layered look. Pair it with leggings and houndstooth skirt, also on sale. Size 6 or 10.

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #6: Wee Gallery

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

My oh my, nursery wall decor has come a long way, hasn't it? When I was little girl, the only "wall art" decorating the bedroom I shared with my sister were my errant Crayola scribbles (sorry, mom and dad). But for our kids- even the tiniest of infants- there is an abundance of ways to enliven nursery walls (some of it easily removable or interchangeable). About 6 years ago, Wee Gallery came onto the scene with its clever idea to create artwork based on the fact that newborns see black and white outlines most easily (Wee Gallery was started by new parents, natch); you will notice that Wee Gallery's illustrations look like simple black marker drawings on a piece of paper, but with juuust enough extra color and flair thrown in. So your newborn will really be able to take a look at what's on the walls, and you will like it enough to let it stay as your child grows older. Take a look at what I mean:

Set of 3 Wrapped Canvases- Garden Collection ($60)

Complete Set of Garden Wall Graphic Decals ($38)

Garden Greeting Cards (your choice of 1, $4.95)

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #5: Tatutina

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Giveaway #5 is a set of four terrific pieces from Tatutina, a successful mom-and-daughter owned business based in Massachusetts. Tatutina makes colorfu nursery and home accessories decorated with non-toxic, lead-free paints. I've admired their products ever since I spotted their popular bookends five years ago while shopping for R's nursery. This giveaway winner will receive all four of the following items from Tatutina (a retail value of $101):

Recipe Box ($25). A pretty, floral wooden-hinged recipe box for those of you who have time to cook...

...and this equally pretty Take out Menu Box($28) for those of you who do not!

Baby animals dish set $18.00. This dishwasher-safe melamine dish set is gender-neutral and arrives gift boxed.

Baby Memory Box $30.00. Has room on front for one of your favorite 4 x 6 photos of Baby, and ample storage space to stash plenty of keepsakes.

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #4: WonderToast

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

It wouldn't be a giveaway week without some cute baby onesies, right? This afternoon's giveaway is a gift set from WonderToast, a company started by Anna Woltz, a USC film school graduate who formerly worked for Nickelodeon. WonderToast's bright onesies explore numbers, shapes, and colors through fun and exotic foods.

First, the winner will receive three organic long-sleeve baby onesies ($32 each, sizes 3-6m, 6-12m, or 12-18m). The winner will receive the first three (starting from the left in the photo): "T is for Tandoori Chicken," "D is for Dim Sum," and "F is for Falafel." The onesies are 100% organic cotton and are tagless and itch-free. And check out that adorable gift packaging!

Plus, an autographed copy of WonderToast's very own ABC Coloring book ($4)

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #3: Petit Baby

They have a superb selection of European and wooden toys from some of my favorite lines, including the German-made Plan Toys. This morning's giveaway is a complete package of the following three items for your budding aviator. Each toy is made of eco-friendly rubber wood, with non-toxic wood stains and finishes. The retail value of this package is $102 and includes:

2nd Blogiversary Giveaway #1: Skip Hop

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Welcome to MyMomShops's 2nd Blogiversary Giveaway Week. Get ready to win some fantastic prizes! There will be 2 contests per day, now through Friday- 10 contests in all. Enter as many contests as you'd like by midnight (EST) on Sunday, but just one entry per person per contest, please. All winners will be announced on Monday, January 19th. Ready? Good luck, and have fun!

First up, a complete nursery organization package by baby gear designer extraordinaire Skip Hop. The package includes:

Two large bin-gos ($25 apiece). Boy, I could use these everywhere. Measuring 16.75" x 12.5" x 12.5", these soft canvas catch-alls stylishly store everything from toys to books to blankets. Circle handles make it easy to tote it from room to room; it also folds flat for easy storage. Available in chocolate/natural, natural/raspberry, or natural/sky blue combos.

Two small bin-gos ($20 apiece). The same stylish storage, but about half the size. And this one has four handy side-pockets for smaller items you might need right away. Lost remotes, anyone? Available in same color combos as above.

And, when duty calls, turn to this Toolbox Diaper Caddy ($38). Where were these when I had my first baby? Toolbox gathers all your diaper-changing necessities in one portable storage solution, with two side pockets and drawers for extras. Available in white/mint, sky blue/lime, and raspberry/bubble gum.

The total value of this package is $128! I can't think of many better ways to organize and brighten up your child's nursery (or your family room, or living room, or playroom....)

Baby's First Spoon

I posted before about the unbelievably beautiful products by Beehive Kitchenware, which just may inspire me to cook more. Turns out they have a few baby gifts on their site too...like these lead-free pewter baby spoons ($22 each). Choose from four baby animal silhouettes (which help baby grip the handle, too)- duck, chick, bunny, or pig. Arrives in a gift box. $22 at Beehive Kitchenware.

10 Days From Now

Gotta get this I Heart President Obama pinback button to wear on Inauguration Day (and to add to the Election '08 keepsakes I'm saving for my kids). Grab one for just $2 at the Etsy storefront of Button Empire (R. is reading over my shoulder right now and chimes in, "I heart Obama, too!")

Great Deal on Rollneck Sweaters

I love monogrammed rollneck sweaters for kids, and these cotton ones by Baby Knits and More are some of the most affordable ones I've come across. Available in a wide range of sizes (preemie through kids 12) and lots of colors, and made in the U.S.A. $52.95 at Baby Knits and More (click here for their full selection of personalized sweaters).

We're (Almost) Two Years Old Now

Pssst....MyMomShops is about to celebrate its 2nd "Blogiversary" (my first post was on January 17, 2007). I'm spending this weekend putting the finishing touches on our 2nd Blogiversary Giveaway Week. From Monday, January 12th through Friday, January 16th, there will be TWO giveaways per day. The prizes are FANTASTIC thanks to some very generous merchants, including Skip Hop, Wee Gallery, and Tatutina. Be sure to check back on Monday to enter as many contests as you'd like (want a reminder? e-mail me with "newsletter" in the subject line to be reminded about this and other giveaways). And thanks for two years of reading MyMomShops!

Custom Cupcake Toppers ($6) by Mary Had a Little Party.

Lana Kole

I stumbled onto the Etsy.com shop of Lana Kole, a Baltimore-based surface and textile designer, and fell in love with the vinyl wall stickers. I'm sure you can see why:

President Barack Obama ($25)

Modern Elegance ($22)

Wild Daisies ($32)

Each of these designs can be customized in the colors of your choice, too. I'd love to try these out!

Bacon 'n Eggs

Winter Water Factory is a New York City design shop that makes great hand-printed clothing for kids and adults. Their eggs and bacon tee is on sale for $22 (normally $32) in a size 2T at This is Auto. Eggs & bacon just happens to be S's favorite breakfast- though due to his big size and hearty appetite, a 2T would be too small. Snatch it for your own good eater at This is Auto.

Deux par Deux pour R.

R. is very picky about clothes (no dresses, no skirts, no sweaters, and no pants without elastic waists). Needless to say, this has limited her wardrobe to a handful of staples like tees and leggings from Gymboree. Recently, I held my breath and ordered her some designer duds (by Deux Par Deux) on sale that might fit her stringent requirements. They arrived and she loves them! Check out the Deux Par Deux Floralies T-shirt (now out of stock, but see similar shirts here), and Deux Par Deux Floralies Leggings ($18.27, reduced from $29, sizes 2T-7) at Smug Baby. While you're there, see if you can snag deals on other designers like Room Seven, IKKS, and Catimini at Smug Baby. There's a low $4.95 flat rate for shipping, too, and my order arrived super fast.

You Won't Forget This Announcement

Tiny Prints has recruited one of my favorite kids' designers, Dwell Studio, to create a line of Dwell Studio's birth announcements, both with or without photo. One of my favorites is this girls' Elephant Fun: Begonia Announcement ($1.74 each). In case you haven't noticed, elephants are the new owls in kids' decor and design (remember last year's owl craze?). Start your little girl off in style with this or other birth announcements from Tiny Prints.

Not Crazy at All

I ordered S's winter coat (now on sale) from an online baby boutique I hadn't heard of before, Psycho Baby. I am so glad I've discovered this site. They carry fun, irreverent (but not off color...you should see some of the other products I'm told about...sheesh) baby and kids' clothing, as well as cool toys, books, and accessories (with brands like Converse, Jeeto, Rockabye Baby, and Vans). And, they sometimes throw in free little toys into your package when it ships. Pretty cool. Besides S's coat, here are some other items we now own (or covet) from Psycho Baby:

The Incredible Hunk Tee ($28, available as a onesie, or a tee up to size 6). Funny and retro- the best combination.

Wes & Willy Heart Sweater Dress ($66, sizes 2T-6). I'd make an exception to my "no black dresses for kids" rule for this one. Has a matching knit cap. gloves, and scarf, too.

Heelarious Kayla Zebra High Heel Crib Shoes ($37, size 0-6 mos). If you have a girly girl friend who is expecting her baby girl, this is a great shower gift. Definite conversation piece!

Scribble Away

I have a new "go-to" birthday gift...it is creative, fun, quiet, and very affordable. My mom first bought it for R. last year and I knew it was a keeper. It's Scribbles: A Really Giant Drawing and Coloring Book . No ordinary coloring book, this one is full of open-ended drawings and scenarios. This is an appropriate gifts for kids of all ages. At Amazon.comthe book is a bargain at $11.99 (usually retails for $19.99); pair it with a set of new crayons or markers for an easy, sure-to-please birthday gift.

Time for New Mittens

Chasing Fireflies is a site that sells beautiful (albeit pricey) kids' clothing by designers like Oeuf, Room Seven, and Deux par Deux. They are having a winter sale right now and you can save big-time on trendy threads like this Mitten Sweater by Oeuf which I have coveted for a long time. It's available in either pink or brown in sizes 1 through 5, reduced to $49.99 from $94.

2009 Papered Together Letterpress Calendar Giveaway Winner

Congratulations to "Dumaurier" who said she was most looking forward to "my husband coming home from his deployment." Please e-mail me with your name and address to claim your prize.

Everyone else, remember that our 2nd Blogiversary Giveaway Week is starting next Monday, January 12th. Check back Monday for TEN big giveaways including clothing, decor, jewelry, and more!

Up, Up, and Away

My kids had such a blast with their cardboard rocket ship recently that I bet this Cardboard Airplane would be a big winner too. The product description promises easy assembly and storage. As for siblings fighting over whose turn it is to play pilot, well, you're on your own with that one. $50 at Spoon Sisters.

Knuckleheads

I've just discovered Knuckleheads, another trendy boys-only designer. Their 100% cotton, cream/tan/black plaid Rockabilly Dalton Shirt is on sale (just $12, normally $40!) in sizes 18mos-8years (order a size up, the fit is slim) at Modern Munchkin. Check out their other Knuckleheads clothing, too.

Viole-A!

I love anything voile, including this Voile Pocket Dress from Tippicanu. The tie-back dress with pockets and sash is available in hisbuscus (orange) or white in little girl sizes up to 6, and makes a perfect vacation getaway dress! On sale for just $19 (reduced from $27) at Tippacanu.

Flight of the Conchords

In two weeks, one of my favorite HBO shows, Flight of the Conchords, returns for its long-awaited sophomore season. If you haven't seen this show before, you must give it a try! It's not your typical comedy- it has a very dry, deadpan humor that is nonetheless hysterical. It's about a New Zealander rock duo, Brett and Jemaine, who are trying to make it big on the music scene in NYC. They have an incompetent manager Murray, and one lone stalker-ish fan, played brilliantly by Kristin Schaal. Brett and Jemaine are endearingly pathetic; strapped for cash, they have to film a music video on a cell phone camera. I can't really give you a better description here because the show sort of defies it. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. If you want to catch up, you can buy Flight of the Conchords - The Complete First Season from Amazon.com for $23.99.

Bye Bye Baby Center

Thanks to my friend/tipster Irene for notifying me that the popular BabyCenter.com store is going out of business in early January (another sign of the tanking economy...sheesh). Take advantage of tons of great deals up to 80% off before January 6th. This Fleurville Rerun Messenger Bag wins points for its pretty design and the fact that it is made from 10 recycled plastic bottles! Reduced to $37.50 (was $74.99) at BabyCenter.com.

Little Mister Preppy

If my son were still wearing infant/toddler sizes, I'd definitely buy this European Tipped Corduroy Sweater from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child. Love the classic, old-school look and of course the monogram. It's a wool-blend knit but is machine washable; available in sizes up to 18-24 months. On sale for $36.99 (was $54) at Restoration Hardware Baby & Child.
